We sent the very special Andy Barghani to BCD Tofu House in New York's Koreatown to learn all about Korean cuisine. Joined by the erudite Susan Kim, Andy tastes his way through BCD Tofu House's menu and then learns how to make some Korean staples, including seafood pajeon (scallion pancakes) and seafood soon tofu.

"You develop an unfortunate bias of not embracing other textures." Is perhaps the most American description to literally anything American.

This series pre-dates the pandemic and the BA blow up and it was doing some important things that have now become relevant - highlighting local restaurants run by chefs of color. So good for Andy for doing it before it was cool.

BCD is OK. It's the place you go to after the bars when you're hungry at 1 AM. Beverly Soon Tofu closed down during the pandemic here in LA, which was sooooooooo gooooooood. If you didn't eat there, you lost out. Sorry.

See she’s Korean and knows what is authentic. Non Korean Guy who’s reviewing this wouldn’t really know if it’s supposed to taste like that. I’m sure it tastes good, but when she said, “nailed it” then you know it’s legit. So this guy did a good job with this video.

Good for him. He’s having a Korean chef teaching him how to make Korean food. The only way it’s not considered cultural appropriation. 👍🏼 and he has a Korean chef reviewing it with him. Bravo, I can’t be offended by this. 😂 but I’m sure others sjw will be. 🙄

I'm surprised Andy cant flip the pancake....I mean, he's a pro chef! I'm neither chef nor pro, but that's like the simplest thing in the kitchen.

love this but i dont think susan was the best pick to introduce korean food.... there was a lot of "i think... i feel like..." isn't she supposed to be the subject matter expert? why is she so uncertain with her statements

3:30, definitely feel like that bias isn't just prevalent in only chefs who were trained in the U.S, but also most americans! I.e what we think "breakfast," should be vs other cultural traditions (donut/pancakes vs banchan).

As far as ice cubes in cuisine, growing up with an Italian background, summer is not complete without a tomato salad with ice cubes. Tomatoes, garlic, fresh basil, a good olive oil and frozen water. Dash of dried oregano and you have my favorite dish of all time.

This is such an informative series, and I have watched all of them, including the Chinese cooking, Indian, Thai, Middle Eastern, and now Korean. One thing that we didn't get in this video was a discussion of the specific spices used in the cooking. This was a feature of the previous videos. Every ethnic cuisine exists somewhere in the five boroughs, so I hope there are going to be many more of these episodes.

korean cooking actually doesn't use a huge array of spices. (mine don't anyways) a lot of gochugaru and gochujang, seasame oil, soy sauce, garlic, etc.

@Mortimer Zabi Why should you expect what you don't deserve?
Mortimer Zabi
Mortimer Zabi 6 days ago
@recoil53 It's 4/10 because apparently no one counts lumpia as Asian because Filipinos are considered too Americanized. Yes I am petty. No, I don't care. I require neither your respect nor kindness.
Mortimer Zabi
Mortimer Zabi 6 days ago
@kinda blue Or just effing bored. But no, you went straight to "bigot," as if you had the chronic need to be pissed at something. "Virtue signalling," what a joke. And yes, I am disturbed. Not ashamed to admit it.
recoil53
recoil53 6 days ago
@Mortimer Zabi Because 3 out of 10 is not close to being exclusive, nor pandering. But a bigot would find it excessive.
kinda blue
kinda blue 6 days ago
@Mortimer Zabi I read it as 'too much Asian content' for your liking. I can't read your mind with just your vague, yet obviously disturbed, comment. Especially when the comment holds no basis in fact, as I already pointed out. So maybe you're not a bigot, just triggered and virtue signalling.
